What is Open Source?

The open source we will talk about here will be related to software in the virtual environment. Programmes that contain the following four items are open source software.

  • Freedom to run the software as you wish, for any purpose.
  • Freedom to look at how the software works and adapt it for your own purposes.
  • Freedom to distribute copies of the software.
  • Freedom to distribute edited versions of the software.

So what are the features?

One of the best features is that the code can be read by anyone. Therefore, anyone can make improvements or customisations to the code. You can also share your changes publicly in environments such as GitHub so that your code can be evaluated and improved by many people. Be sure that this will add a lot to you and your application. Another best feature is that it works faster than most of the compiled languages. It is also possible to develop more functional software in a shorter time. Finally, the most important feature is that the software is more stable. This means that open source programmes are great for three reasons compared to compiled programmes. These reasons are;

  1. Open to everyone,
  2. Fast operation,
  3. It is safe.

What are the Examples?

  1. Drupal : "If you want to create a blog, use Wordpress. If you want to make Wordpress, use Drupal.", Dries Buytaert emphasised the importance of Drupal compared to other open source systems with this sentence.
  2. Android : It is a free mobile operating system developed by Google, Open Handset Alliance and the free software community, based on Linux, for mobile devices and mobile phones.

  5. Notepad++ - It is an open source code editor with GPL Licence.
  6. Eclipse : It is an open source and free integrated development environment (IDE). Although its main focus is on Java and Java-related technologies, it is also used for different languages such as C and Python thanks to its flexible structure.
  7. CodeBlocks : It is a software development environment just like Eclipse. The focus is on C++.
  8. Mozilla Thunderbird – It is smaller in size and faster than Mozilla, and it is written using the XUL user interface language. It focuses on email and newsgroup management features.
