TS EN ISO 9241-151 describes the standards that websites should have with the ERGONOMY OF HUMAN - SYSTEM INTERACTION standard.

The most important goal in web user interface development is to make the interface accessible to the widest possible range of users, including people with disabilities. Although it is also important in terms of accessibility of web user interfaces, it does not aim to cover accessibility in a comprehensive manner.

The following issues should be focussed on when designing a website.

  • High-level design decisions and design strategy,
  • Content design,
  • Navigation and search,
  • Content presentation.

As can be understood from the above points, the presentation of content and content on websites is more important than anything else. If you cannot present the right content in the right way, you cannot create successful websites. Another important point in the presentation of content is accessibility. The content should be accessible by every individual and search engines.

Although websites vary according to their purposes, they can be grouped as follows; public information websites, electronic commerce applications, internal web applications (portals), etc. Therefore, a clear definition of the purpose and strategic goal of the websites to be developed is a high-level design decision.

A conceptual model of the web user interface is an important basis for defining the content and navigation structure. Such a conceptual model can be developed by analysing existing information structures such as topic hierarchies as well as the tasks and mental structures of potential users. The content of the web site should be adequate for the purpose of the site and the typical information needs of the user.

Web Content Usability Standards and Criteria is a separate standard developed by ISO. Web content usability criteria, such as how Web content can be made more usable for people with disabilities, are described in this standard. Within the scope of this standard, principles have been defined and criteria have been established for websites to be considered successful. Criteria at the level of A, AA and AAA determine the level of usability of websites, AAA being the highest value. These criteria are defined by TSE as follows.

  • Level A: For conformity at level A (minimum conformity level), the web page fulfils all level A success criteria or an alternative model is provided that provides conformity.
  • Level AA: The web page meets all A level and AA level success criteria for AA level conformity, or an alternative model is provided that achieves AA level conformity.
  • Level AAA: The web page meets all A level, AA level and AAA level achievement criteria for AAA level conformity, or an alternative model is provided that achieves AAA level conformity.

It is really pleasing that TSE has set standards in the field of informatics, the important thing is to keep these standards up to date and apply them to websites.
